Slumpbuster

No comments yet

What a classic. The Slumpbuster comes for the vise of John Barr. John's book, Barr's Flies" is one of the best fly tying books that I own. I continually reference his book to refresh my tying skills and get inspiration on creating new fly patterns.

If you want to catch a TOAD, this fly is certainly one to try. This fly can be effective using a dead drift technique, as well as being stripped. I have altered his original design technique a bit, specifically the application of the collar. I feel it gives the collar a cleaner look around the cone. The Slumpbuster is tied on an AFF S403 (down-eye, 3x-long, round-bend, streamer/nymph hook). Again, Allen Fly Fishing continues to create excellent hooks at an excellent price. Check them out at www.allenflyfishing.com. Try tying this pattern in different pine squirrel colors, such as rust, tan, black, crawdad orange and natural.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
